Position Summary

The Discovery and Access Coordinator / Librarian provides vision, leadership, and innovation for the division’s efforts to ensure its rich variety of analog and digital information resources are findable and accessible. The Discovery and Access Coordinator collaborates with personnel across the division, throughout the university, and with external partners to ensure access to and discovery of resources within the division. This position holds a faculty appointment with rank leading to tenure. This position is governed by state and federal laws, and agency/institution policy.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic leadership and direction for the university’s metadata and discovery initiatives and operations
  • Supervise, develop, and mentor staff members in the Discovery and Access team (includes library systems, e-resources, and metadata)
  • Plan and manage projects and personnel in the effective and timely completion of multiple projects while maintaining efficient delivery of day-to-day operations
  • Collaborate with faculty, students, and division personnel to ensure discovery and access technologies are appropriately integrated into learning and instruction, including face-to-face and online classes.
  • Promote the use of the university’s discovery and e-resource platforms by developing training and outreach programs for students, faculty, and division personnel
  • Provide leadership to division and team in bringing new and cutting-edge topics within the team’s purview to the division’s attention in a concerted, measurable way
  • Collaborate with the Director of Technology and Digital Initiatives in developing and maintaining vision, strategy, policies, and standards for discovery and access
  • Supervise and provide direct support to users in person and over the phone for all units within the division on issues related to discovery and access
  • Collaborate with Repository and Digital Scholarship Team and Digital Systems, Training, and Support Teams to ensure a responsive, leading-edge digital library program.
  • Ensure the documentation of procedures, standards, project management activities, and change control processes
  • The division’s operation includes some 24/7 services, so this position includes an expectation that the employee will be able to respond to problems after hours, at night, and on weekends.
  • Build partnerships and relationships among Collections and Archives units, as well as with others in the university community.
  • Engage in scholarly, professional, and service activities, including publishing in peer-reviewed publications, participating in continuing education courses and professional organizations, attending seminars and workshops, reading current literature, and maintaining professional contacts in the community. Participates in university service and community activities
  • Perform other work related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of emerging library trends and technologies
  • Experience with technologies, standards, and practices involved in technical services
  • Experience with integrated library systems (Innovative preferred)
  • Experience with discovery systems (EBSCO preferred)
  • Ability to evolve services in response to evolving technologies, user expectations, and patterns in metadata and discovery services
  • Ability to collaborate with campus partners to enhance and support research at all levels, ensuring that Collections and Archives are integrated into teaching and learning
  • Ability to effectively supervise, evaluate, motivate, and mentor library faculty and staff
  • Superior written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated project management and organizational skills
  • Experience with developing and providing instruction and training
  • Ability to work independently and in groups
  • Commitment and ability to work effectively with diverse populations in a collegial environment.
Required Education and/or Experience

Master’s degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA-accredited school or approved terminal degree. A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in the provision of technical services in an academic library setting with a minimum of two (2) years’ experience in a managerial or leadership role

Preferred Education and/or Experience

Five (5) or more years of experience in management positions in an academic library. Demonstrated experience in developing working partnerships with academic departments and other campus communities.
